Have you ever dreamed of strolling through endless banana plantations with the sun kissing your face and the ocean breeze in the air? Welcome to Madalena do Mar in Madeira, where the vibrant Rota da Banana invites you to go on a tropical adventure.

Banana Wonderland

Madeira, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, is also a major banana producer. The south coast, basking in sunlight, is adorned with banana plantations, and Madalena do Mar boasts the largest one on the island. What makes this experience truly special is that you can wander freely amidst the banana plants, soaking in the tropical vibes that permeate the air.

How long does it take for a banana plant to produce bananas? The banana plant on our dresser can also produce bananas. Even edible. It often takes more than 3 years for the first flowers to appear on the plant, and these are necessary for the fruits. The large leaves of the plant are thin and tear off quickly.

Rota da Banana

The Rota da Banana comprises three short walks: RB1, RB2, and RB3, collectively spanning a delightful 1.5 km. This delightful stroll weaves through dense banana plantations, offering an easy and enjoyable half-hour journey along narrow paths, levadas (irrigation canals), and a myriad of banana plants. Opt for RB1 if you have limited time; it's our favorite and offers the most variety. This is the only route where you can follow a levada, providing an extra layer of charm to your exploration. Watch here the video start from 2:40

If tropical atmospheres resonate with you, this is an experience you'll cherish. Every banana farm belongs to an owner, it is not allowed to just pick and eat bananas. Insight into Banana Production

Witnessing the locals at work in the plantations provides a unique insight into the banana production process. See bunches with pistils being carefully tended to – removed manually at the perfect time. When the bananas ripen, they are expertly cut by hand.

Despite the grandeur of banana production, it's interesting to note that the bananas are primarily intended for consumption on Madeira. A small portion finds its way to mainland Portugal and parts of Spain. Madeira was once a major exporter to Europe until strict regulations regarding length and curvature led to rejection at auctions. A culinary shame, considering the wonderfully soft and sweet taste of Madeiran bananas.
