Two Paths to Glymur: Choose Your Adventure!
Beginning the Glymur waterfall hike provides two captivating routes, each delivering a beautiful perspective on Iceland's second tallest waterfall.
1. Out-and-Back Hike:
For those seeking a straightforward adventure, the out-and-back route takes you up the east side of the river to the magnificent waterfall, and then you'll retrace your steps for the return journey. During the summer months, a log serves as your trusty companion for a river crossing, adding an extra layer of excitement to the hike.
2. Looping Around for Extra Delight:
If you're up for a bit more adventure, the loop route is the way to go. Ascend the east side of the river, cross the river above the waterfall, and return by strolling down the west bank. This route introduces a second river crossing, injecting a delightful twist into your hike. Plus, you'll be treated to a different perspective of Glymur from the west riverbank, adding a fresh dimension to your experience.
Let's start! Thee hike Step By Step
From the car park, it is a relatively flat walk to get to the Botnsá River. It takes about 30 minutes to walk to the river. Then the trail enters a small cave near the riverbank. Hike down through this cave and follow the trail to the left along the river.

Continuing the journey, it takes approximately one to one and a half hours from this point to reach the highest vantage point overlooking Glymur Waterfall. Following the crossing of the Botnsá River, the path ascends steadily. The trail is intermittently steep, and in certain sections, it edges along cliffs. If heights make you uneasy, be mindful, as this hike may pose a considerable challenge.

En route, you'll encounter numerous delightful viewpoints of Glymur Waterfall. The higher the ascent, the more spectacular the panoramic views become—not just of the waterfall, but also of the entire valley.

The second river crossing, situated just above the waterfall, features a wide, shallow, and unhurried river flow. While it's a safe crossing, be prepared to get wet, as there's no log, bridge, or stepping stones to keep your feet dry.
You have two options for the crossing: keep your shoes on and finish the hike with wet footwear, or go for the barefoot. During our mid-July hike, the water was chilly, and crossing barefoot left my feet feeling numb by the time I reached the opposite bank. Additionally, moving cautiously is essential, as the rocks and pebbles can be slippery and uncomfortable if you're not accustomed to this type of terrain.

On the return journey to the parking lot, the trail initially follows the riverbank. Then, you'll face another choice. You can opt for the straightforward trail leading back to the car park or embrace a more challenging route descending along the riverbank. Despite being of equal distance, it's worth noting that the riverbank trail is rated as more demanding.

Ensure an optimal experience with these helpful tips
Early Arrival is Key: Aim to arrive early, ideally by 8:00 am or even earlier, to beat the crowds and savor the tranquility of the surroundings.
Height Concerns: If heights make you uneasy, consider an alternative hike. Portions of the trail closely approach cliff edges, potentially posing a challenge for those with a fear of heights.
Footwear Matters: Equip yourself with sturdy hiking shoes. The trail can be rugged and uneven in certain sections, requiring footwear with reliable support and traction.
Essentials to Pack: Pack essential items such as sunscreen, sunglasses, snacks, and an ample supply of water to stay hydrated throughout the hike.
River Crossing Preparation: If you prefer not to cross the river barefoot, bring a second pair of shoes specifically for this purpose.
